Our Church History

In 1953 thirty-two of the Myrtle Creek Seventh-day Adventist Church members decided to organize a church in Canyonville. This would relieve the crowded conditions in the Myrtle Creek Church and reduce traveling time for those members living in the Tiller, Milo, Days Creek, Canyonville, and Riddle areas.
On October 3, 1953 the newly formed group had their first Sabbath services in Canyonville, using the Methodist Church. On October 17 the first social was held in the Masonic Temple. The new congregation was alive and active.
A donut machine and a popcorn machine were purchased. The machines were well used to sell popcorn and donuts at parties and social events. There were many banquets and dinners for added funds.
The growing congregation decided to build a social/gym building and a two-room school. August 15, 1958, five years after forming the original group, the first services were held in the new structure. In spite of the cold concrete floor and trouble with heating systems, the members thanked God for His kindnesses and leadership so they could have a school and meet in their own place. A third room was added later.
The members met in the gym for 15 years before they were finally ready to start on the new church. Groundbreaking for a new church took place May 23, 1974. The first services were held in the new church on October 4, 1975, only 15 months after the ground breaking. Nine pastors and twenty-two years plus one day passed before their dream was realized from the first church service held in Canyonville in 1953 in the rented Methodist Church. Open house for the community was held October 19, 1975.
In 1966 the first community service building was built, which later became the Pathfinder Club building.
The church building was designed for easy upkeep and long-term use. Much hard work and many volunteer hours were put in to keep the costs down, both in the building and fund-raising efforts. A brother and sister team made all the light fixtures, cutting the cost of lighting down considerably.
With hard work and sacrificial giving the church debt was paid off in 3 ½ years, and the church dedication took place in May 1979.
By 1990, money had been raised for Phase I of the new 7,100 square foot Multi-purpose room and community center. Maranatha Flights International was asked to come and help build the building. In preparation, the concrete foundation was poured and lumber was piled high for the erection of the shell and roof. As church members and Maranatha volunteers worked, the local newsmen and townspeople came to see what was happening, and watched with wonder as the Center went up before their very eyes. With the 14-day completion of Phase I, it was hailed as a “created miracle” by the local newspaper. Of course, the people of the Canyonville Church were very excited and eager to begin Phase II, which was to finish the rock and stucco facing and the interior of the building.
Now the building contains a thriving Community Service Center serving the needs of people in need. The fellowship hall, kitchen, and fireside room are a great blessing for church functions and social events, as well as serving of fellowship and guest dinners.
